These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

More about Faries
“The tooth fairy is Fae propaganda it teaches kids that it’s okay to invite the Fae into your home and sell them parts of your body” this is a post a ran across while browsing the internet, my first reaction was to laugh, then I was frightened. Finally, I was brought back to the conversation we have been continuously having about Fae and Faerie within Tolkien’s mythopoeia. As we might remember Faerie is the magical place where fantasy takes place and Fae are fairy’s or Elves. This post most likely is inspired by the fairies of old folk-tales used to warn people about some sort of danger. These faeries where treacherous and often evil while Tolkien’s Fairies are wise, at least in “fairy-stories” and “The Lord of the Rings”. In "The Hobbit", we see faeries that are a bit more like the treacherous fairies since they taunt the party by singing silly songs as they walk by them in the woods. I guess what was really interesting about this post is that it shows that things are really about perspective. The tooth fairy is often a benevolent figure that makes childhood a little more fun, but if we say she buys body parts it makes it sound a lot more macabre than it truly is.
