These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

Event post-Hobbit Society
This past Friday I attended the Hobbit Society Meeting, where we gathered in a group to talk about Tolkien’s work in a very similar way to how Tolkien would gather with Oxford students to discuss classic literature and mythology. We discussed among other things, the relationship between power, Sauron, and Melchor. The idea was brought up that if Sauron was corrupt possibly his creator Melchor was too. Some argued that Melchor wasn’t corrupt he was dissatisfied with his power and wanted more, but Sauron was corrupt. It was also brought up how Tolkien says powers is corrupt except for when related to the Valar. At some points, we would veer away from our intellectual discussions and talk about very silly things. One example of this is when we brought up Halloween and talked about a sexy Gandalf costume which led to other ideas for sexy character costumes. The only good thing that came out of it is that we all agreed a sexy Legolas costume would look the same as regular Legolas. These side conversations that would come up has made me wonder what sort of side conversations Tolkien would have with friends, surely they weren’t all serious all the time.
