These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

Relevance Post
So, I shared this idea with a few of our classmates. They told me it was a bit of a stretch, so I thought I'd share it with y'all and see what you think. So with no further ado: Tolkien's works show many instances of unlikely groupings of characters. The entire Fellowship, Bilbo and all the dwarves, Beorn (with anyone tbh), etc. Most of the characters in Tolkien's works would be content continuing their everyday lives, specifically without interacting with characters of other races. I found this to be very reflective of people. People, in my experience, don't like to be with people who aren't like them. However, certain outside factors can cause different kinds of people to interact with other kinds. In the legendarium, it's for the greater good, basically. But in real life, it is mostly just forced upon us. So really, I guess, I'm just trying to point out the fact that Tolkien really really REALLY tried to write relatable content into his work.
