Relevance Post: Creativity

Today I think real creativity and art are becoming rarer and rarer.  Take, for example, the film industry.  Nearly all of the successful films are based off previous works in an ongoing franchise (like superhero films), or stories people already know (such as the Disney remakes of things like The Lion King and The Jungle Book).  I’m not saying that these films are completely lacking in art or are all horrible, but that original creativity is harder to find.
Tolkien’s works “Mythopoeia” and “Leaf by Niggle” are still relevant and important today.  Tolkien talks about putting all of one’s effort into creating something new and beautiful.  I think there is an enormous market for real artistic creativity today because it is so hard to find.  Whether you have stories, or books, or films, or music, or anything else that you want to create, you need to do it and do it well.

I often think about this, especially regarding the film industry. People have noticed that Hollywood has for a long time now just been cranking out remakes and retellings and making a ton of money off of them. I think one of the main reasons for this lack of original creativity is that meaningful originality can be life consuming. Tolkien poured his entire life into his creation but the result is something that is a baseline for so many other works. Any great artist or inventor for that matter, empties their soul into their work. This is obviously difficult and in our world of convenience and instant gratification, striving through difficulty is avoided more often than embraced.
