These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

Relevance Post: Ecosia
In The Scouring of the Shire, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin come home to find the Shire despoiled and corrupted. Most of the trees have been chopped down for fuel or for the amusement of Sharkey and his gang of ruffians. The Hobbits are appalled at the shape that the Shire is in. How could this have happened? Who would unnecessarily chop down all of the trees?
Unfortunately, this is the state that our world is presently in. Deforestation combined with continued burning of fossil fuels is causing global warming to skyrocket and it is estimated that if the current rate of deforestation continues, there won't be rainforests in only 100 years.
But there are great humanitarian efforts to stop these processes before it is too late.
Ecosia is a Google Chrome-based web browser and search engine that uses its advertising profits to plant trees in developing countries. They have planted over 43 million trees so far and Ecosia won't sell your data for profit, it's servers run on 100% renewable energy, and they are completely transparent in their financial reports so you can be sure where their income goes. I have already contributed over 300 trees in only 6 months of use. Can Google match that?
I encourage you all to check out Ecosia at www.ecosia.org and make it your home page and search engine. Ecosia can be easily added to Chrome and Firefox, and they even have a mobile app. Please share their mission on social media and tell your friends and families about the fantastic work Ecosia is doing.
Unfortunately, we don't have access to the earth from Galadriel's orchard that restored the Shire to its former beauty. However, we do have tools like Ecosia to ensure our own Earth is beautiful for future generations to come.

This is a super cool idea! I really like that the organization uses really mundane things like searching for cupcake recipes to do some real good. I think Tolkien would have appreciated something like this, too. Even though he was against industrialization and environmental destruction, I can easily imagine him embracing an adaptive technology like this which would allow a (hopefully) more peaceful existence between nature and urbanization.
