I love the characters Merry and Pippin, and although they are small they both display the qualities of hope and perseverance. This quote comes from the scene where Théoden is going to battle to save Gondor and Merry wishes to come with him, but he is too small to ride a large, fast horse and has been told he cannot go. Although Merry is small and does not have a lot of battle experience, he is still hopeful that he can help to save Gondor with Theoden, and eventually, he does end up putting up a fight in order to go with him. Like loyalty, hope is an important characteristic taken by Merry and Pippin, who are although inexperienced, keep their heads high for the future and do not go in search of death, but in search of life, prosperity, and peace as the hobbits know it. So much courage for such an inexperienced person, that it is almost hard to explain or to understand. But, he acts with faith and loyalty that is what makes his hope for the future so powerful.

While I also value Merry and Pippin's courageousness and valor. I can not help but wonder if maybe they insisted on helping out of inexperience. They know so little of the world outside of the shire, therefore they live very comfortable and sheltered lives. I think it is possible that they want to help but hey do not understand exactly what they are signing up for. Although that would be especially true for when they decide to accompany Frodo, I would hope that at the point where Merry wants to ride in to war he has understood the gravity of the situation.
Aule,
At this point in the story, I think it's unfair to say that neither Pippin nor Merry understands what they're signing up for by offering their services to Rohan and Gondor. They've both seen death and watched someone close to them sacrifice himself to save their lives. They may still be inexperienced, but not so much so that they don't know what it is they're doing. Maybe they don't know the exact specifics, but they know that their choices at this point have bigger consequences and they know that they're putting their lives in danger by offering to help.
Just my two cents,
