These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

Hobbit Society
This past Friday, Hobbit Society met and discussed the topics of food and festivities. We started out by focusing on different foods seen throughout Tolkien's legendarium, such as cram, Orc liquor, and mushrooms. We focused primarily on Hobbit celebrations since they were the most prominent, but we did discuss a little about how the Orcs might have celebrated. It was interesting because one of the original ideas was that the Orcs would not or could not celebrate because they were enslaved, but we were reminded about how many of the people who have been and are enslaved find things that give them hope and celebrate that. One of the biggest lessons I took away was how the link between hope, food, and celebration is a universal connection. It was an exciting meeting and I can't wait to join more!
