These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

HSA FTF
So I went to the HSA First [Thurs]day Film this week. It was a film called "Walkout". (great film, 10/10 recommend watching it) It is based on a true story about a Latinx girl who meets some student activist in East Los. This group of students is tired of being considered "lesser" because of their ethnicity. After trying other methods, this group of activists gets 5 East Los schools to hold walkouts (ICONIC). As what happens with completely valid peaceful protests, the participants of the walkouts are beaten by police and then arrested. There's some more things that happen BUT you gotta watch the movie 'cause I ain't telling. But so my point is, this film was really about racism and discrimination. And in terms of Tolkien, all I can think about is the dwarves within the legendarium. They are thought of as lesser than other 'good' races within Middle-earth. They are treated accordingly. With the oppression might be minute, it is there. And I just think that race plays such an important role in the legendarium that I want to draw this sorta relevant parallel.
