Hobbit Society

This Friday I attended the Hobbit Society meeting. Since it was the October meeting some people wore costumes. Ryan was Gandalf (well he was kind of Gandalf he wore a grey bathrobe but had no wizard hat), Ruby wore a cape with a leaf pin like those given to the fellowship in Lothlorien, and Sarah was Tomb Raider. This time we discussed the supernatural represented in Tolkien’s Legendarium. We talked about Gollum being a monster, the ring-wraiths, Barrow-wights, and the occasional vampire. Eventually our discussion turned toward Ungoliant, Shelob, and Witches. While we don’t really see Witches in Tolkien’s Legendarium, we see Galadriel who is a powerful woman who is magical. Here is where we began to discuss the use of powerful woman as beings of good in Tolkien’s work, and how he among others began to change the narrative of powerful woman being evil and corrupted. We see this not only with Galadriel but also with the Varlier, and a few other characters. So I guess we can give him credit for that even if there is very little women, and none in the fellowship.
