These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. This blog is intended to expand discussion among UNM Hobbit Society members beyond what meeting times allow.

I am unsure of the dates of publication when comparing Tolkien's "On Fairy Stories" and C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia," but it seems that many of the principles and rules outlined by Tolkien in "OFS" are closely followed by Lewis in his creation of Narnia. If "OFS" did indeed precede Narnia, was this completely coincidental or was Lewis intentionally (or unconsciously) adhering to many of Tolkien's concepts? Thoughts?

"On Fairy Stories" was originally published in 1947, and the Chronicles of Narnia series was published between 1950 and 1956. I agree with the your unconsciously adhering statement. I feel like Lewis probably didn't intentionally include Tolkien's definition of Fairy-stories, but as they were close friends, they most likely discussed fairy-stories and ideas for their own stories.
LIke Aredhel said, I think they probably had very similar ideas on fairy-stories and those were reflect in "OFS" and Narnia respectively.
