These are the archives from 2010-2018 for the discussion forum hosted by the UNM Hobbit Society at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The purpose of our group is to meet and associate with others interested in Tolkien, and to learn more about the author, his written works, and his sources through discussion, guest lectures and academically oriented activities. Frodo's determination and compassion gives others hope. He is set on going as far as he can , knwoing the world depends on him and his decions Without his compassion and determnation no one would have been able to place their hope in him.
In the chapter Land of Shadow in the last Book, Frodo says to Sam: “Lead me! As long as you’ve got any hope left. Mine is gone.” I think Sam’s determination and hope is the only thing that helped Frodo through. Here, Frodo loses his determination and hope, yet Sam never gives up. In my opinion, it was Sam who kept the hope alive and pushed Frodo forwards to the very end. I think Sam’s influence on Frodo is very similar to Aragorn’s will on Gimli and the horses in the Path of the Dead. Frodo pushed on through Sam’s determination rather than his own. In Chapter III of the last Book: “But even as hope died in Sam, or seemed to die, it was turned into new strength. Sam’s plain hobbit-face grew stern, almost grim , as the will hardened in him….neither despair nor weariness nor endless barren miles could subdue. “ Tolkien writes that hope in Sam “seemed to die”, and then Sam instantly is stronger and more hopeful than ever. (side note: hopeless courage). Even in a famished and dehydrated state, he carries almost twice his body weight for miles and half way up Mount Doom. I think Frodo carried the greatest burden, but only through Sam's hope, determination, and compassion for Frodo.
